Readers of this blog are aware of my "take" on a third party. For many reasons, I believe they do not and will not work in our political system. Certainly our history since TR's Bull Moose Party movement in 1912 has made clear that third party movements are spoilers. They usually get the opposite result from what they want. Now comes an American Thinker article of considerable merit (I think) that analyzes the third party idea from the perspective of now-through-2012. I will not try to summarize, other than to say it sharply questions whether advocates of a third party have really done hard analysis of the matter. The link follows, and it's worth a read.

Comment by TPTN: Steven Reagan Myers on April 28, 2011 at 10:58pm Steve Ross: You are aware of my respect for your opinion that the development of a major third party is not a viable option in restoring our nation to Constitutionally limited government. You in turn are aware of my position that while a major third party is probably not best to pursue right now, that it just may be wise and necessary at some point to pursue in order to fully bring our nation back to its roots.
The foundational roots I speak of are those that George Washington spoke from in his Farewell Address and that for the most part were embraced by Thomas Jefferson. Among such roots are those that speak to concerns about party control of governmental processes that impact foreign affairs/relations and ill effects our nation domestically.
It is my belief that George Washington's concerns over such ill effects were correctly prophetic, as any reasonable person can conclude have been levied against our nation and its people by partisan acts of the controls of the Republican and Democrat two-party system. It is my further belief that we would be wise to ultimately dismantle the two party system in the sense of the control that the R's and D's are allowed to perpetrate on such things as our candidate selection and election processes.
I am of the thought if the R party will not make self-applied changes and call for the same from the D party, then the only option left will be the rise of a third major party. Such a party would necessarily have a mission as part of its platform to pass legislation that will set things right, forever preventing perverted controls from being administered by any party, including itself.
I realize that my use of the word "perverted" may have seemed out of place, but I make reference to the way that the D's and the R's are both guilty of perverting our political system into the cesspool it is today. So, I say, let's continue to pursue and support radical change for the good in the R party with our eyes wide open; one eye on the R party, and the other on our options.
